New stamp



Since the 6th February 2009 new stamp set devoted to 175th D. I. Mendeleev's anniversary available.

Dmitriy Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834--1907) was a Russian scientist and public figure, encyclopaedist. He was known as chemist, physicist, economist, technologist, geologist, metrologist, pedagogue, aeronaut. In 1869 while working on "Foundations of chemistry" he discovered on of the most fundamental laws of nature -- the periodic system of elements. Also Dmitriy Ivanovich made an important contribution to metrology. Since 1892 he was a head of the first scientific institution in Russia -- The Main Board of Weights and Measures (now known as VNIIM in name of D. I. Mendeleev). On the stamps depicted the standard scales "Nemetz" of 1895 used by Mendeleev for precision weighing in process of renewal of standard of mass (it was a pound in 1895--1898) and the druse of rock crystal from the Mendeleev's collection of minerals. The photography of D. I. Mendeleev provided by Metrological museum of National Standards of Russia in VNIIM in name of D. I. Mendeleev.
